Ahead of the Curve

What does that phrase even mean? I have no idea. Today is August 18, 2009, and I have just met persons #3 and 4 of the Persons Project. That's right, everyone! I am one person ahead of schedule. Hoorah. The first was Ellen. She was quite obviously homeless, wearing bright green eyeshadow and a grimace on her face. As I walked past, she asked if I had a dollar for the bus. I gave it to her, even though I'm pretty sure she used it for cigarettes, not transportation, and I told her my name is Rose, and she said her name is Ellen. When I asked if I could take her picture for my blog, she said, "Sure, if you want to. I don't smile very good."
I went into the Governor's Cup (another coffee shop that I frequent) but they're wi-fi was being silly and not letting me use it, so on my way to the Blue Pepper (whose wi-fi is always reliable) I saw a man sitting on a bench and coloring. I see this man all the time downtown, but I've never spoken to him. Today I decided to ask what he was drawing. "Postcards," he said. "Would you like to buy one? I'm selling them for a dollar." I didn't buy one, but I introduced myself, and he told me his name was Jay. Do you ever meet someone who just makes you smile? They say sweet things, and their voice is soft to go with it, and these are the people that you see and they just make your day? That is Jay. As I was walking away he said, "I hope we meet again. On better circumstances, when we both have money and we can go get a cup of coffee."
"I hope so," I said.
Thanks for reading.
